Layers of fortress walls showing phased construction

The Alhambra grew like a coral reef—layer by layer, logic and beauty intertwined.

Early Bones

  • 9th–12th c.: Fortified outposts on the Sabika; embryonic Alcazaba.
  • 1238+: Muhammad I establishes the Nasrid seat; reinforces walls and towers.

Courtly City

  • Muhammad II–IV: administrative quarters and palace foundations take shape.
  • Muhammad V (14th c.): Comares Palace and the Court of the Lions—apogee of refinement.

Gardens and Retreats

  • Generalife develops as a summer seat; water and shade as design priorities.

After 1492

  • Christian uses overlay spaces; Palace of Charles V inserts a Renaissance cylinder.
  • Conservation eras later stabilize rather than expand.

Bottom Line

Read the Alhambra as phases you can walk: fort → court → garden.
